Have you ever wondered how your air conditioning system actually functions? Are you of the opinion that all the air conditioner does is pump out cold air to cool your room? This article explains air conditioning basics in a simplified and easy to understand manner for the home owner.

When you think of your air conditioner, imagine a refrigerator without the box. Both work on the same principle. Warm air from the room is passed through the cooling system of the air conditioner and then pumped back into the room as cold air and the cycle continues until the desired temperature is reached.

The air conditionerĂ¢€™s compressor condenses the Freon gas making it very hot and high pressured. The hot gas then travels through a set of coils to disperse the heat and turn it into liquid form. The liquid gas then moves through an expansion valve whereby it evaporates and becomes cold, low pressure gas. The cold gas then moves through a set of coils allowing the gas to absorb heat and cool the air inside the room.

The gas is mixed with a minute quantity of lightweight oil that serves to lubricate the compressor. Air conditioners not only work to cool the air, they also help in cleaning the air. Indoor units are fitted with filters that trap dust, pollen and other types of allergens floating in the air, making the air cleaner and purer. Your air conditioner can also serve as a de-humidifier, taking the excess water found in the air, cooling it and finally disposing of it outside the house through an outlet built into the unit. Some units use the cooled water by sending it back into the system to be reused.

Air conditioners are of several different types and include geothermal, portable air conditioners, ductless mini splits, evaporative coolers and window units. The most commonly used units in homes are the window units and split system units, which we will take a look at in some detail.

Window units are generally fixed in window spaces and are so structured to fit a standard window frame. All window units come equipped with a compressor, expansion valve, hot and cold coils, two fans and a control unit. The main advantage of a window air conditioner is it is relatively inexpensive to buy and installation is very easy. The major disadvantage of the window unit is that the cooling capacity is not very high and operating costs mount up.

Split level air conditioners are available in wall mounted and floor units and contain a compressor, expansion valve and condenser but unlike the window unit which is one piece, the split level system has two units. One unit is placed inside the room and the other outside the house. The cooling effect of the split level unit is higher and more efficient than the window unit.
