Where to find great patio sets

The huge popularity of outdoor entertainment and leisure has made the patio an integral part of the living space in millions of homes across the globe. This trend has elevated the terrace furniture set to the level of fine decor and wrought iron patio furniture has long been a favourite item furnishing terraces, verandas and patios.

The appeal of wrought iron patio furniture certainly begins with its strength and durability. It is solid and substantially stronger than its wooden and plastic counterparts and requires less care in the long run. It can be left out at the mercy of the elements and with only basic care will last for decades.

So what is wrought iron exactly? Wrought iron is used to describe any iron or even mild steel items that consist of ornamental detailing formed by heating iron square or round bar red hot and twisting or bending it into intricate shapes. These detailed elements are then combined in a flat, angle or square tube frame to form the furniture. Wrought iron is also commonly used in the construction of ornamental gates, fences and palisades.

The only real weak point in any wrought iron patio furniture piece are the points where the individual parts are welded together. If these welds are well executed, the furniture will quite realistically last for many years. One point to take note off when looking at these sets are these welds. If they appear flimsy or rough choose another set. Badly welded joints can compromise the strength of the piece and cause cuts or tears in clothing.

The fact that most wrought iron pieces are assembled by hand lends the furniture a unique character that is in another class entirely from the mass produced plastic sets. This in combination with the wide range of colours and finishes and the endless variety of cushion choices available allows these sets to fit right in with just about any decorating theme.

Although wrought iron patio furniture is very durable and low maintenance there are one or two basic steps to follow if you want to get the maximum life out of your patio set. The first is to regularly check all pieces for scratches and chips in the finish.

As is the case with all iron and steel items, wrought iron patio furnitures biggest foe is rust. When chips or scratches are encountered they should be sanded or brushed down with a wire brush or medium grade sandpaper to get rid of all loose paint flakes and any rust that may have formed. The repaired spot can then be treated with a rust inhibitor and painted with colour matched enamel paint.

Cleaning these sets is also a piece of cake. Simply remove the cushions, hose down and scrub with a soft brush and mild soap water solution, rinse and allow the sun to dry the pieces off. This keeps dust build up to a minimum and also makes checking for scratches far easier.

So if you want to add some real class and style to your outdoor leisure setup, consider wrought iron patio furniture. Solid and heavy enough to stand firm in a hurricane yet graceful and attractive, wrought iron furniture sets make tasteful, versatile and long lasting additions to any patio environment.
